Selfstarter Success Stories
Carol Mahoney - Chirpy Plus
Carol launched her tech company in 2016. Having a technical background she developed an amazing solution but struggled to find customers fast enough to make her business sustainable. This resulted in the business looking for funding to fuel growth which distracted from growing her business and only left expensive and ineffective marketing campaigns as a choice. After redesigning her strategy, Carol started focusing on B2B growth tactics that allowed her to target the right customers and grow her business.
Today Carol has more than 20,000 users for her products across Australia and New Zealand.
Fraser McConnell - Squawk Squad
The team at Squawk Squad have a huge passion for the environment and saving native birdlife. Their unique solution which combined an automated trapping system for pests and a platform that allowed the public to fund the traps, made it a New Zealand first.
Without knowing whether the system would be adopted by the general public, funding and partnerships weren't an early option for their team. Without funding the project would not be able to kick off. After working together for three months, Squawk Squad had developed a story, business structure and funding strategy to gain support from New Zealand's Wildlife Champions such as Peter Beck founder of Rocketlab.
Squawk Squad successfully raised over $70,000 in its first round of crowdfunding and over the past two years, has educated more than 45,000 children on how to better protect the environment.
Brad Booysen - Storkk
Brad launched Storkk in 2013 to help the legal industry stay on top of its professional development compliance. Initial sales were slow as the legal industry is unique in its structure and traditional business development didn't shift the needle for user on-boarding. Redesigning the sales and lead generation strategy from the bottom up allowed Storkk to capture, convert and onboard new users rapidly, positioning Storkk as New Zealand's number one software application for CPD compliance.
Within the first 12 months of this strategy, Storkk grew its user base to 1,000 paid members with no marketing budget.
